Habitat but not group size or recent predator activity affect corvid collective vigilance at carcasses

چکیده

Vigilance is an important anti-predator behaviour that can be indicator of the predation risk faced by potential prey animals. Here, we assess collective vigilance, or vigilance level entire group, corvids (Family: Corvidae) at experimentally placed carcasses in a desert environment Australia. Specifically, explore relationship between levels and habitat which carcass was placed, time since predator (dingo Canis dingo, wedge-tailed eagle Aquila audax red fox Vulpes vulpes) present carcass, group size around carcass. We found are more vigilant open habitat, but recent presence does not affect corvids. The results demonstrate link animals may adopt behaviours irrespective they occur predator.

Interactions among social monitoring, anti-predator vigilance and group size in eastern grey kangaroos.

Group size is known to affect both the amount of time that prey animals spend in vigilance and the degree to which the vigilance of group members is synchronized. However, the variation in group-size effects reported in the literature is not yet understood. Prey animals exhibit vigilance both to protect themselves against predators and to monitor other group members, and both forms of vigilance...

Group Size Predicts Social but Not Nonsocial Cognition in Lemurs

The social intelligence hypothesis suggests that living in large social networks was the primary selective pressure for the evolution of complex cognition in primates. This hypothesis is supported by comparative studies demonstrating a positive relationship between social group size and relative brain size across primates. However, the relationship between brain size and cognition remains equiv...

Maternal zinc supplementation does not affect size at birth or pregnancy duration in Peru.

To estimate the effect of maternal zinc deficiency on pregnancy outcomes, we conducted a zinc supplementation trial in an urban shantytown in Lima, Peru, a population with habitual low zinc intakes. Beginning at 10-24 wk gestation, 1295 mothers were randomly assigned to receive prenatal supplements containing 60 mg iron and 250 (g folate, with or without 15 mg zinc. Women were followed up month...

Acidification and warming affect both a calcifying predator and prey, but not their interaction

Both ocean warming and acidification have been demonstrated to affect the growth, performance and reproductive success of calcifying invertebrates. However, relatively little is known regarding how such environmental change may affect interspecific interactions. We separately treated green crabs Carcinus maenas and periwinkles Littorina littorea under conditions that mimicked either ambient con...

Interleukin-8 but Not Interleukin-6 Variant May Affect Susceptibility to Brucellosis

Background: Increased levels of interleukin-8 (IL-8) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in acute human brucellosis have been reported. Previous studies have shown that the production and level of IL-6 and IL-8 cytokines are associated with the polymorphism of the encoding genes. Objective: To investigate the probable association between IL-6 (-174 C/G) and IL-8 (-251 A/T) gene polymorphisms and susceptib...
